Die Antwoord

Image
I wanna talk about Die Antwoord for a moment, because they represent a part of our psyche that is not often explored because of its very nature - awkwardness. Whether or not you've heard of them, the first thought you would probably have upon watching this live performance is "What the fuck?", probably accompanied by that laugh you reserve for the embarrassment you feel on behalf of someone you think is (or should be) embarrassed. You will hear many people in the audience in this video laughing that way. So what's so embarrassing about this? The fact that they take themselves so seriously? Maybe the way the girl looks like she knows its awkward but still goes for it anyway? Maybe you're sitting there thinking, 'you know what, they're not half bad, and the guy definitely has talent, if he would just stop acting weird'. Is this anti-pop pop? They are popularly unpopular, the Internet Explorer of the music industry, the musicians you can only...

It's TV, La

Image
I can't sit still for a 2-hour movie anymore. We've evolved (?) into a generation of TV show audiences; we can only sit still for about 45 minutes at a time, and it's getting more and more difficult for TV people to keep us entertained. That could also be because we are armchair directors and producers, and we like to shout at the TV in prediction of what's going to happen next. Can I get a A-MEN? Here are my top 6 awesomest shows of all time. Battlestar Galactica   Or, as Anas likes to call it when he makes fun of me (as everyone does), Starwar Balactica. For some reason, the mere fact that the title of the show is a combination of the words battle, star, and galactic is enough to turn them off. The truth is, this show is less about space and more about humans, their behavior, their (questionable) morals, and everything in between. I love the re-imagined series for its great writing, and for being a very intelligent show.  Doctor Who I love...

How to Cope

Image
I was really saddened to read the blog posts of my favorite blogger ever Dooce and her husband Blurb , mainly because for a long time, I looked up to them as a couple who could manage their relationship even when the dark cloud of depression hovers over it. They've always been quite upfront about the challenges that a couple faces when one partner has depression or bipolar disorder, and I like to think it has helped a lot of people who are in the same situation feel less alone in their struggle.  Being in a serious relationship is one tough motherfucker, but being in a serious relationship with someone who has a mental disorder is the Marsellus Wallace of relationships - triple the hard work, triple the toughness. At some point during the course of the relationship, someone won't be able to cope. While that's true, really, for anyone, there's always that added, aforementioned cloud.  If you're in one such relationship, probably the best and most imp...

#156 ~ Portal Dreams

Image
I'm still playing Portal 2 . I only manage an hour of it at a time, mostly because I'm not physics-inclined, and it takes me forever to understand spatial information. Also, I have a very minor form of ADD, so minor that in fact it is not ADD and is just a lack of focus. My brain gets tired after a half hour of thinking because it's so not used to this activity. My brother finds this a great source of amusement, and takes this opportunity to state a very obvious fact when we play cooperative mode on this game: "Maybe you're just stupid." I object, of course, because while I have caused his death a multitude number of times, I myself have yet to die just as often . Who's stupid now, bitch? EH? EH? I've also recently injured my knee. WOO-HOO. This officially graduates me to the level of REAL LIFE ATHLETE, since I acquired my magnificent knee injury over playing a sport. 100 points, Team Potato Chips! HUZZAH! Now that I am limited to doing knee re...

Ya gotta love the internet. I do sometimes wish I didn't spend that much time online, but I don't mind when I do. Here's some stuff I found: 1) I'm not much into make-up and beauty, but I follow Huda Kattan over at Huda Beauty; she posts some pretty interesting stuff. Much of my interest in make-up has to do with photography, although sometimes I do get days when I feel like primping myself up and stuff. Anyway, Huda posted this video of a guy trying to put make-up on his girl. It's cute. I bet if he was a photographer, he would have done better. <3 2) I can NOT wait to get to NYC. When I do, I'm gonna go see this Brooklyn "store"  where everything is free! People come in and take what they want, but they are also encouraged to donate whatever they're not using. Books, clothes, and all kinds of shit. I've been thinking of starting something similar to it over here in Jeddah, but I don't know if it would ever work. What you guys ...

If there's one thing about Sara, it's that she's always smiling. As if she needed any help, when she came over, she had to take this picture with this stuffed pillow my cousin sent me. The resemblance is uncanny. :) Also, it makes me think of this: So, Senator! So, Janitor! So long for a while You know you're never fully dressed WITHOUT A SMILE! Haha, good times. <3

Am I A Bad Teacher? :(

Image
I ROFL-ed at this. It's only hilarious because 80% of the time, I'm that foul-mouthed teacher. (Minus the car-wash part. I'll only start doing that next year. WATCH THIS SPACE!) " Okay, shitbags. Entertain me. " - True Story.

#45 ~ V-Day

Happy Valentine's Day, Bebi!  All the way from Jeddah. Coz Bebi, WE ARE CLEAR. While most of the world is celebrating love and commercialism, our Hay2a is busy prowling the streets ( again ) for businesses and individuals participating in this love-mongering, and preaching against this day. In the process, they have unwittingly been raising more awareness and promoting this holiday. Hilarity ensues. Great job on defeating your purpose(s)! On a lighter note, here's a great post from Sharifa's photo blog , and here is a song from the Backstreet Boys, for is there not a better time to unleash the boyband ballads than on an equally mushy day? You agree with me, of course. Enjoy! And if you're one-half of a couple, remember never to compare your relationship to others (because that's very unfair and stupid), and always make time to spend with each other. #42 ~ Warning: Long-ish BSG Post

Image
Due mostly to my un employment status, I got to play BSG twice this week, an average of 6 hours per game. Let me put it in perspective for you. If you're the type of person who buys lottery tickets, that's like winning twice this week. If you're a single guy (or a married man), it's like scoring. Twice. With the same woman or not, doesn't matter. If you're a kid, it's like having a birthday party and getting awesome gifts, twice in one week. If you're a girly girl, it's like having a shopping budget and discovering the things you wanted to buy were 50% off. Twice. You get my drift.  This is where most of the action happens. If you happen to be in this restaurant, and you haven't seen all 4 seasons of BSG, do not, DO NOT open the drawers of their tables, because you will, I repeat, YOU WILL BE DISAPPOINT. Let's just say one of those drawers contain major spoilers. It's our own version of geo-caching.  You know what happens when you an...
