Doing the Humblebrag Wrong

Image
I won't crack a joke about the New Year coz I'm pretty sure all the lame-asses over at Twitter have it all covered. This is my last post for 2012, which means BADGES UNLOCKED. It's a full-on humblebrag post, so brace your face. I'll be listing what this year has brought me, because REMEMBER THE GOOD. Meat Days I started going meat-less 5 days a week in January, reserving 2 days for my meat days, which replaced my cheat days. It's become so ingrained in my system that my already-awesome friends would always ask me if it was my meat day before we'd go out for dinner. This is a badge unlocked because it got me a little bit more conscious about the shit I eat. I follow Hakeem 's Veggiesaurs program (not strictly, which is my downfall), and having him and Rayan around really helped motivate me, knowing I wasn't alone in this. That Jeddah Podcast We published 22 episodes of the podcast this year, which is a huge step from only 10 episodes publishe...

Humor really is a funny thing. Marry it to sarcasm, and you successfully filter out the people who just "don't get it" from the people who JUST DO.  Ghaidaa "gets it." She is one of few people who get what I mean when I don't say what I mean. It's really no accident that she got me this post-it note pad: and that I went to crazy town with it. Mostly on my friends, really. And only on the ones who "get it". Check out this tumblr that I created to post all the notes I wrote out. If you look at the bright side, it's kinda like a directory of my friends in Jeddah. Fair warning: It's NSFW.  And while you're reading the notes, remember to BE OFFENDED. That's where the fun is. Click HERE to read the notes. Because all the things you like about people are also the things you hate about them.

Why Wil Wheaton Takes The Cake

Image
So this happened (over at Geeks are Sexy ): After which @totallynotsarah ran to tell reddit all about it, naturally: And this is all relevant to my interests because a) Wil Wheaton and b) internet culture. I've followed Wil Wheaton's blog for a few years now, the same way that I have Neil Gaiman's - I'm not necessarily up-to-date with - or a big fan of - their work, but I like their blogger personalities. I enjoy reading about their process, about how they see things, why they think the things they do, their rants and raves, and all that other stalker stuff. I especially like that they are involved with their fans, and that because they are, they have become these approachable celebrities. I almost peed my pants when I got a reply from Chris Hardwick on Twitter that one time last year, and like @totallynotsarah, when I'm feeling helpless/hopeless, I always go back to that brief moment when everything was possible for as long as the internet existed...

TV is for Old People

"Alright, I wanna know what's hip and happening with young people nowadays. What's the latest thing on TV now?" said Old People. "TV is for old people," said Young People. "Fine. What's the latest thing on the news?" "Newspapers is for old people." --- Old People vs Young People The Mainstream vs Hipsters Muggles vs Geeks Internet Explorer vs Mozilla Firefox As if we didn't already struggle to fit in, new classes are constantly being born. And we all wanna be born on the 'right side'.
