The Yes Man Plan

Now that we're safely past New Year's Resolution season (by now, most of us have slowed down on the gusto we started off with, AMIRITE?), and because I am reverse-hipster, I'm making public my own resolutions.

In keeping with reverse-hipsterdom, I started working on my New Year's Resolution in December last year, so I'm really just continuing the work. I call it The Yes Man Plan, because how can anyone not love any movie Jim Carrey is in?

I have 3 goals this year: Fitness, The Having of Lots of Money, and Writer Betterment.

The Yes Man Plan states that I will say Yes to anything that will contribute to either one of those 3 goals, and No to anything that takes away from it.

The simplicity of this plan hurts my head. I've done years and years of overcomplication and over-analysis that just settling for something this simple is gonna take me a little time. It's been working for me so far. Not excellently, because I am nothing if not below-average, but I'm constantly aware of The Yes Man Plan's existence, so 1000 internet points for me.

I use these apps to keep track:

Fitness
Aside from Fitocracy and MyFitnessPal, I use SuperBetter to keep track of not only my workout and diet achievements, but the general Yes Man Plan. It's like playing a game for a few minutes every day as I level up with each achievement. At the end of each week, I get a summary of what I've done. It's pretty sweet. And the app is free.

The Having of Lots of Money
I've had to do a lot of "psychologizing myself" before I could start on a Money Plan. The problem is that I don't actually respect the money I earn through hard work. Like most of my bad habits, everything is in my head, so I needed a visual to understand what really goes on. Fucking First World Problems, yo.

So this app, MoneyTron, is awesome for two things: it makes a ka-ching sound when you enter your expenses, and TRON. Tron is awesome. Buy the app because it's Tron-themed. (Saudi Riyal is not available as a currency, though, so I use dollah dollah signs, yo.) It costs like 2 dollars.

Writer Betterment
Because there's no point in calling myself a writer when I can't write for shit. Day One is like a digital diary, locks and all. The best update to this app came late last year when they allowed photo uploading.

I've been taking photos everyday since September 2012 at 9pm of whatever I'm doing/whoever I'm hanging out with for a future project, and I upload those photos on to this app and caption it. Boom, daily writing exercise.

It's gonna cost you about 5 dollars. Totally worth it.

What also helps is surrounding yourself with a group of supportive nerds, always the best kind of friends. I've got both Menelik and Squeek egging me on with my little projects, and some days, I just do it to shut them up. Because love and friendship.
