What Price Happiness?

I thrive on compliments. Like being told such things as "You are devastatingly smart."

Sadly, it is my nature to debunk such compliments with my very own actions.

Now, everyone knows Teayana. If you live in Jeddah, you have been to one of their branches. Probably to enjoy their tea, and their comfortable seats, and the nice atmosphere, their polite waiters, so on and so forth.

My question is, have you ever gone to Teayana and stayed there for a total of about 8 hours, 7 of which you spent playing the Battlestar Galactica board game nonstop?

I didn't think so.

We're breaking conventions here, people. In many levels. (If you're a BSG fan, contact me with haste!)

Anyway, so my friends and I decide to nerd out this weekend and dedicate our hard-earned weekend to reliving the show through a board game. In public. We racked up about 260 riyals worth of drinks and manageesh, and because I was the only one who didn't have change, I paid for it with my 500-riyal bill.

Waiter brings me my change of SR 230, and we continue bringing the LOLs and the paranoia and shit.

I was so busy basking in my Cylon glory that I left the restaurant without even taking my change. SR 230 left on the table, which I'm sure the waiters thought was very generous of me. I'm sure they had plans of treating me as royalty the next time I visited because COME ON, WHO LEAVES A 230-RIYAL TIP FOR A 260-RIYAL BILL?! Right?

Until I went back the next day and asked them if I could please have the change I left on the table the previous day.

Of course I didn't get it back. Plus, the waiters gossiped about me and the generosity they mistook me for.

I can't complain, because after all, it was my fault. What devastatingly stupid person would be so engrossed in a 7-hour-long board game involving basestars and battlestars and suspected Cylons that they would forget their cash on the table?!

I've been trying to comfort myself with the fact that, yes, I might have lost cash, but I had 7 hours worth of insane fun and that is worth more than what I lost. Right?

At least I didn't lose like 10,000 riyals. Right?

At least I won the game. Right?

... Right?

This was worth it, right?






Update: I just played another game today and I lost. Not sure if I feel more devastated by this, or the loss of my money.

    I have a balance of SR60 to be collected from China Gate, which is next door to Teayana. Coincidence?
    I hope they will remember me when I go back next summer :/

I got a pretty inspiring quote from a friend today. It goes: "No one can make you feel inferior without your consent." - Eleanor Roosevelt Now, that's quite true. A little insensitive to the little details of the things, people and situations that make someone feel inferior, but sure, she might truly be on to something here. The quote implies that everyone has (and can) control everything that goes on in their lives. That is of course, misleading. Human relationships and the human mind are both very complex and so intertwined that there is no way for anyone to be in full control of what or who makes them feel inferior. Therefore, it is important to remember that these quotes are not to be followed religiously in all aspects all the time. Think of it as a reminder to be aware of the things you can control so you may control them, and to eliminate those things you are able to eliminate so that you are not made to feel inferior. Eliminate. What will you be eliminating?

Band-Aided.

When they said that Band-Aid s could fix anything, I didn't really believe it. Early this year, (a few months after I bought my laptop Olaf), I dropped my phone charger on it and the thin layer glossed over it acquired a tiny crack. Over time, the crack got bigger. I resisted the urge to put a sticker over it, mainly because the reason I loved Olaf so much was how minimalist and white it was. Anything would've distracted from this. Besides, there isn't a sticker cool enough to be on the cover of Olaf. (Yes, I mother it to death.) However, it really got worse. I had to do something. The solution? A nice kiddie adhesive bandage that I can remove anytime (in the event that I get tired of looking at it) without causing the crack to expand. Yes, Band-Aid AND Snoopy are always the best solutions. *** You know how sometimes you say the stupidest thing, and you realize that AS SOON AS YOU SAY IT, at that exact moment when you just can't take it back?
