Lady D,
ReplyDeleteI want to ask a question without try to sound bitter, so read this while imagining M&M's and Milky Ways falling from the sky..
Why does the Jeddawi population always want to feel exclusive? What I mean is why not have a Saudi Earth day, or GCC earth day.. or just conform with the rest of the world and celebrate Earth Day..
I'm 7ijazi, but i don't live in Jeddah, so should i feel excluded from this event?
I know I am trying not to sound bitter, but wallah i'm trying.. so add Kitkats to the above list.. and not the crappy kitkat we have here, the ones from london.. hmmm kitkat..
That's a valid point and a very good question, frogman, so I hope I can clarify things for you, Kitkat in hand. *munching*
ReplyDeleteWe didn't intend to make it exclusive. The reason we targeted Jeddah is because we live here, and this is the city where we know the most people. Of course EVERYONE in Saudi Arabia is encouraged to participate, and in fact, EVERYONE IN THE WHOLE WORLD is encouraged to support, but the truth of the matter is, we have to start very little.
It's a huge, global project, and it has to be divided into smaller, manageable pieces.
My friend Sharifa and I, we don't have the means, the resources, or the ability to make an effective change in the whole of Saudi Arabia, but we can start at home. We'll take it step by step.
We start in our own homes. Now that we have convinced our immediate family to support the cause and learn more about it, we move on to the city we live in.
The main point of it being Jeddah specifically is not exclusivity, but rather, manageability and effectiveness. InshAllah, when we have more supporters, and more people are involved in this, we can all get the other cities and Saudi Arabia as a whole to participate.
In fact, I encourage you to get as many people in your city to participate in the event, and let me know about it so we can feature it. Again, not because we want to be condescending, or popular, or exclusive, but because that's what YOU can manage. Does it make sense?
We will try to support anyone who needs us, as much as we can, as much as 2 girls in a restrictive city can. It's the sensitive nature of the Saudi society that makes us very cautious about starting movements like this. We don't want to cause an uproar, or anything else.
The main goal of this whole event is to make people stop and think about how they are consuming energy, and how that is, in turn, affecting their environment.
I'm really very glad that you posted this comment, and I think it deserves a blog entry on it's own. I hope I answered your question, and I hope that you WILL support this event, not because you are 7ijazi, not because you are Saudi, but because you are human.
Thanks for the candybars, they really helped. :D
Ok now that you answered in the nicest way possible, I feel like a complete ass lol..
ReplyDeleteI completely understand your point, but i would like to believe that one of the beauties of the blogging world is the extreme diversity within the blogger pool, which makes wider spread initiatives easier..
That said, I completely agree with your statement: "It's a huge, global project, and it has to be divided into smaller, manageable pieces."
Maybe next time around, we should plan a wider scale event amongst the saudi blogging community to spread to their respective cities.
please don't get me wrong. i respect what you and your friend are doing, and completely agree with the rationale behind it.. I commend you for your great effort, and I wish that inshallah with time, more people like you will appear through the country, region and world.
