Self-Help.
If there's one thing I like more than French fries, it's frozen chocolate milkshake.
Even more than that, though, I like it when I manage to fix my own problems. All by myself. Of course, it's always so much easier to just throw a fit and make life hell for the next customer service representative, but when the problem is solved without resorting to threatening people's lives, why, it's just exhilarating, that feeling of accomplishment.
Like sneaking into a VIP bathroom and having a nice pee where you're not supposed to.
I mean, what? Cough.
So my problem involved my laptop Count Olaf, pictured here:
(Background design by the beyond-awesome Ghaida'a Zahran)
Don't mind the mini Snickers that I didn't steal from a friend's candy basket.

I mean, what? Cough.
Anyway, so The Laptop With The Awesome Name went (and stayed!) mute for the longest time. I couldn't hear any sound at all, nothing from my videos or music, and not even the default sounds. When this happened in the past, I'd remedy it by
a) re-starting the computer
b) taking out the battery, replacing it, and then re-starting it
c) talking directly to the computer in a threatening tone, reminding it of the DVD player's fate when that one didn't cooperate
Miraculously, all three methods worked. Sound would always come back.
This time was different. I re-started maybe 5 times, took out the battery and slapped it around, and whispered to it angrily in a bad Irish accent. Nothing happened.
After a couple hours of high blood pressure, I Googled help, and here it is. If you own a Vaio and you come across this problem, just click the link and follow the instructions.
If all else fails, resort to verbal abuse. Again.
Hi there Diana …
ReplyDeleteAs a fellow owner of Sony VAIO when I reached the part of the ‘mute’ problem of your post I went like … ‘what the …. Noooooooo waaaaaay.’
But when I visited the page you referred to, I went like …’ooooohhhh thanks God … you just got me there.’
The explanation is that I firstly interpreted the ‘mute’ problem as if your VAIO went in a coma or something; I thought it was not working, not responding, and not rebooting. But when I figured out that you meant no sound by ‘mute’ (daaaah!!), I just relaxed.
The whole point is that I am a big fan of VAIO computers (and all Sony products for that matter) and always have great trust in its performance and you were just close to give me a heart attack!
Anyway, the reason I am writing this comment is to tell that I like your creative solutions to fix the computer; especially the threatening one. I might use it with my office laptop sometimes (not a VAIO ... of course!!) although I’m going to use onther accent; my Irish is not that good …
